Happy Vegan New Year!

Happy Vegan New Year's Eve & Day!

Another year is ending and a new one is about to begin; here are some New Year's Eve/Day resolution ideas and foods.

About New Year's
January 1st officially became the first day of a new year in 46 B.C. when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar. Celebrating the arrival of the new year is possibly the oldest holiday in recorded history. It started with the ancient Babylonians more than 4,000 years ago, and continued with the Egyptians, Romans, Celts and so on.

New Year's Resolutions: The ancient Babylonians began the idea of New Year's resolutions as a way to start the year off with a clean slate by returning borrowed items.

Lucky foods: When it comes to celebrating the New Year, every country and every culture has its unique routines and charms to influence the incoming year that are believed to bring into the new year good fortune, health, prosperity, and love. Black-eyed peas and lentils eaten on New Year’s Day are said to bring riches and safety to the coming year. Some say the black-eyed pea's lucky streak dates back to the pharaohs. Others say it started in Vicksburg, Virginia, during the Civil War when the town ran out of food while under siege and the inhabitants were lucky enough to discover cow peas (a.k.a., black-eyed peas). Meanwhile, cabbage leaves (a symbol of prosperity) are thought to bring prosperity to those who eat them on New Year's Day. Also it is said that eating 12 grapes, one grape for each month of the year, for prosperity.

Auld Lang Syne: a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1796 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song (Roud # 6294). It is often sung to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight.

Vegan Kwanzaa

This month I will be having vegan guides and recipes for the four main winter holidays this month: Hanukkah (Chanukah), Yule, Christmas, and Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa begins on December 26 to January 1 each year.

Kwanzaa (which means "first fruits of the harvest") is a week-long celebration held in the United States honoring African and Black heritage, unity and culture, marked by participants lighting a kinara (candle holder). Kwanzaa consists of seven days of celebration, featuring activities such as candle-lighting and pouring of libations, and culminating in a feast and gift giving. It was created by Ron Karenga and was first celebrated from December 26, 1966, to January 1, 1967. Families celebrating Kwanzaa decorate their households with objects of art, colorful African cloth, especially the wearing of kaftans by women, and fresh fruits that represent African idealism. Frequently, both Christmas trees and kinaras, the traditional candle holder symbolic of African-American roots, share space in kwanzaa celebrating households. To them, Kwanzaa is an opportunity to incorporate elements of their particular ethnic heritage into holiday observances and celebrations of Christmas. The Black Candle, an award-winning documentary by M.K. Asante, Jr., narrated by Maya Angelou, is a 2009 film about Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa celebrates what its founder called "The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa," or Nguzo Saba (originally Nguzu Saba - "The Seven Principles of Blackness"), which Karenga said "is a communitarian African philosophy" consisting of what Karenga called "the best of African thought and practice in constant exchange with the world." These seven principles comprise Kawaida, a Swahili term for tradition and reason. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the following principles, as follows:

  • Umoja (Unity) To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems and to solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (Purpose) To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity) To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith) To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Vegan Christmas

I wanted to post it a lot earlier in the week. It has been a very busy month!

This month I will be having vegan guides and recipes for the four main winter holidays this month: Hanukkah (Chanukah), Christmas, Yule, and Kwanzaa.

Christmas begins on December 25 (January 7 in some Eastern churches).

Christmas is an annual holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days. Although traditionally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians, and some of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in some areas, including North America, Australia and Ireland) is a popular mythological figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children. Saint Nicholas/Sinterklaas had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music/carol, sending greeting cards, church celebrations, eating a feast, spending time with family, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, and garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly.

Foods:
The traditional/typical [vegan] Christmas foods consumed are goose, turkey, pork, chicken, ham, beef, marzipan cake or candy, panettone, stuffing, various vegetables & fruits (corn, peas, creamed onions, broccoli, squash, potatoes, pumpkin, mangoes, cherries, apples, dried fruits, oranges, lime, jícama, beets, bananas, creamed spinach, root vegetables, etc), cranberry sauce, breads, figgy pudding, cookies, candy canes, rum ball, fruitcake/other cakes, gingerbread/gingerbread houses, savory pies (mince, pot, shepherd's), stews, pudding, dessert pies (pecan, apple, sweet potato, pumpkin), trifle, salad, stollen, nuts, wassail, eggnogg, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, liqueurs, and cider.

Vegan Yule

This month I will be having vegan guides and recipes for the four main winter holidays this month: Hanukkah (Chanukah), Christmas, Yule, and Kwanzaa.

Yule (Winter Solstice) begins on Monday December 21, Neopagan Sabbats begin at sunset the day before the holiday.

Yule or Yule-tide is a winter festival that was initially celebrated by the historical Germanic peoples as a pagan religious festival, though it was later absorbed into, and equated with, the Christian festival of Christmas. The festival was originally celebrated from late December to early January on a date determined by the lunar Germanic calendar. It is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day. Known as Solstice Night, or the longest night of the year, celebration was had as the ancestors awaited the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, the Giver of Life that warmed the frozen Earth and made her to bear forth from seeds protected through the fall and winter in her womb. Bonfires were lit in the fields, and crops and trees were "wassailed" with toasts of spiced cider.

Foods:
Typical [vegan] foods for Yule are: cookies, caraway cakes soaked in cider, fruits, nuts, duck, turkey, eggnog, ginger tea, spiced cider, wassail/lamb’s wool (ale, sugar, nutmeg, roasted apples).

Vegan Hanukkah

This month I will be having vegan guides and recipes for the four main winter holidays this month: Hanukkah (Chanukah), Christmas, Yule, and Kwanzaa.

Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday December 11, or the first sunset, December 11 and will continue till sunset, December 19, 2009.

Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah, Hanukah, Hannuka and the Festival of Lights) is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, and may occur from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar. Traditions include lighting the menorah each night, singing special songs such as Ma'oz Tzur, reciting Hallel prayer, eating festive meals and foods fried in oil such as latkes, buñuelos and sufganiyot, playing the dreidel game, and giving Hanukkah gelt.

Foods:
The traditional foods consumed during the Hanukkah holiday are symbolic of the events being celebrated. Most are fried or baked in oil, symbolic of the oil that lasted eight days. Others contain cheese to celebrate Judith's victory.
