Happy Vegan New Year!

Happy Vegan New Year's Eve & Day!

Another year is ending and a new one is about to begin; here are some New Year's Eve/Day resolution ideas and foods.

About New Year's
January 1st officially became the first day of a new year in 46 B.C. when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar. Celebrating the arrival of the new year is possibly the oldest holiday in recorded history. It started with the ancient Babylonians more than 4,000 years ago, and continued with the Egyptians, Romans, Celts and so on.

New Year's Resolutions: The ancient Babylonians began the idea of New Year's resolutions as a way to start the year off with a clean slate by returning borrowed items.

Lucky foods: When it comes to celebrating the New Year, every country and every culture has its unique routines and charms to influence the incoming year that are believed to bring into the new year good fortune, health, prosperity, and love. Black-eyed peas and lentils eaten on New Year’s Day are said to bring riches and safety to the coming year. Some say the black-eyed pea's lucky streak dates back to the pharaohs. Others say it started in Vicksburg, Virginia, during the Civil War when the town ran out of food while under siege and the inhabitants were lucky enough to discover cow peas (a.k.a., black-eyed peas). Meanwhile, cabbage leaves (a symbol of prosperity) are thought to bring prosperity to those who eat them on New Year's Day. Also it is said that eating 12 grapes, one grape for each month of the year, for prosperity.

Auld Lang Syne: a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1796 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song (Roud # 6294). It is often sung to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight.
