Vegan Hanukkah
This month I will be having vegan guides and recipes for the four main winter holidays this month: Hanukkah (Chanukah), Christmas, Yule, and Kwanzaa.
Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday December 11, or the first sunset, December 11 and will continue till sunset, December 19, 2009.
Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah, Hanukah, Hannuka and the Festival of Lights) is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, and may occur from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar. Traditions include lighting the menorah each night, singing special songs such as Ma'oz Tzur, reciting Hallel prayer, eating festive meals and foods fried in oil such as latkes, buñuelos and sufganiyot, playing the dreidel game, and giving Hanukkah gelt.
Foods:
The traditional foods consumed during the Hanukkah holiday are symbolic of the events being celebrated. Most are fried or baked in oil, symbolic of the oil that lasted eight days. Others contain cheese to celebrate Judith's victory.
